Next up in the 780 countdown? A photo album using improvisational piecing, free motion quilting with the aid of Bernina's Stitch Regulator, couching, and CutWork flower embellishment, this time on a smaller scale. I used motifs from Bernina's Stitch 'N Bloom collection for the embroidery. This is a great way to try out new collections! Keep a stack of designs ready and you will be ready for your next improvisational project...
I'm not a great quilter, but I find I do much better on a smaller scale. It is less intimidating for me to experiment in small areas. The Stitch Regulator makes it much easier!
When I was piecing the center I also added some couching using Bernina foot #21 and decorative thread.
These CutWork flowers were so fun to make! It was really easy to draw them out (either by hand or in a graphics application) and convert them to CutWork in DesignWorks.

ReplyDeletethank you for a giveaway.... I have been brainstorming a project to use cutwork.. wanting to design a "cage" to capture the cancer beast for an up coming Relay for Life luncheon (our table theme is Beauty and the Beast, with the relay volunteers as Beauty taming the beast of Cancer)
ReplyDeleteWow Amanda ~ That is a beautiful cover. I think using the CutWork would be perfect for outfits and special projects for my Granddaughters as well as using them on American Girl doll outfits and accessories.
ReplyDeleteWow, that album cover is just beautiful. I would use a cutwork flower on a doll quilt that I am working on. I think they would look great too on a mug rug. I usually make mine with fabric strips but have seen a lot of beautiful ones with applique or stitching lately.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you MEAN, you are "not a great quilter?!!!" Every project you post is fantastic and the rest of us hope that someday we can quilt half as beautifully as you do. I love your album cover, and now I'm getting all kinds of ideas, like adding handles and sizing it down as a Bible cover for a first communion or confirmation gift, with a beautifully embroidered cross and Bible verse in place of the bird. ReplyDeleteAmanda, I love, love, love, the cover! I am a seamstress that always has a sewing "to do" list a mile long. The good news is that I am extremely fast, so I normally get it all done. Example: I am finishing my 2nd queen quilt this week, and have 6 pairs of pj's to make by Wednesday. I have tried, as a Grammy of 4 now, to start some new traditions. One of those is making things for my Grandkids: costumes, clothing, pillowcases, personalized everything and a tradition of pj's like their Grammy and Grandpa every Christmas. (We live on a small farm, so last year it was John Deere fabric). The family all gathers here after Christmas, and everyone spends the night. It's so much fun.....Anyway, all that to say, I participated in a Webinar a few weeks ago that had a cutwork component. I had to had it, so at my next visit to my Bernina store I checked it out. Being recently retired, I put it on my wish list at the store rather than purchasing it. I need it and I would use it a little on every project. It just adds that little "spark" to everything you make. Thanks for the opportunity to share, and have a wonderful Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to see a book cover I really wanted to make, until I saw this one. Wow! Love it. Thank you for posting! I have the Bernins 830 and love it for embroidery, but it has also become my #1 machine for piecing. Love that dual feed. I now want to replace my 630 with a 780.... yep, I WANT!!! LOL. Thanks for the great giveaway too. Yea!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I've just begun free motion quilting and I love it! The BSR gives me confidence. Anything you use the cutwork flowers to embellish would be beautiful. I make a lot of purses so that is probably where I would put them.
