I tend to buy yardage more than pre cuts. Being a fabric addict, the more fabric I have the better.

Fat Quarters. Jelly rolls are really the cutest, and charm packs are great for a quilt with charm squares, but I think fat quarters are the most versatile and practical from that list. I certainly do have a lot more FQs than charms or strips in my stash, though a JR is very much a coveted item here.

I used to buy FQ's but found they were either too small or too large for the project I was making. Jelly roll strips are great, but somewhat limiting, my preference on a pre-cut would definitely be the layer cake size. More variety than a FQ bundle, and more versatile than a jelly roll.

I love pre-cuts, they're time savers for someone like me who works full-time. I would choose 10inch squares, as they can always be cut down to 5 inch charm squares. There are lots of cute patterns that use both.

My favorite precut is the 2 1/2 inch strips, because it is easier than cutting my own. I usually buy yardage and find it easy to cut my own fat quarters and squares from that. But I often buy charms when they are on sale. It's a good way to see all fabrics in a collection.

It all depends on what plans I have but mostly I like to buy fat quarters. They look so cute all lined up in the drawer. The only problem is that I hate to cut them so I have a huge stash of them. I am really trying to make myself use them more because after all that is why we buy them right?

I've had fun with the layer cakes and charm packs especially when grandgirls want to make something. They don't have to cut, just sew. They go home thrilled with their project completed. We just go to a shop, pick what they like and go home and sew. How easy to past down my love to they plus the memories.

I love any fabric....no matter what the shape or size is. Because my local shops rarely offer moda precut fabric, I usually only buy fat 1/4's or more yardage. I would like to try a jelly roll quilt. I'm glad I already follow your blog so I have the chance to win some thread. Thank you!!!

While I love precuts for their accuracy (I am an unintentionally wonky cutter), I tend to buy yardage instead. FQ's are less expensive, I can mix them in with fabric from other lines for visual interest, and can focus on just the designs/color ways I especially like.

At February 18, 2012 at 3:42 PM , Blogger Jo said...

I prefer fat quarters, I have so many more options with them. However since you can't always get what you want I usually end up buying what the budjet allows when I see something I have to have.

At February 18, 2012 at 3:58 PM , Blogger newhouses said...

I always go for the fat quarters, but lately I'm also buying charm packs, because I'm one of the peoplebuilding houses from scraps. I love colorfull projects so every FQ will be used in multiple quilts and other stuff. Yesterday I bought my first Aurifil 50 cotton spool and it patches perfectly, so it won't be my last purchase. Hope I win the give-away, love to test some more.

I like fat quarters best so I have more options of what to make with the fabric. If I know for sure what I'm going to make with the fabric when I buy it (not usually) and I know I need precuts, then I'll buy them, but thats not my norm.

At first I was going to say fat quarters because they give you alot more options. They can always be cut down.
I did just get a new template to use on 2-1/2" strips to make hexagons. I need to try this out. Thought it might be a good way to use up some scraps.

I just found your blog and love, love, love it. Keep up the great work.
