Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Volume 4, Giveaway

Hi everyone!

Guess what is on newsstands right now? The fourth issue of Quiltmaker's 100 blocks! I'll be giving away a free issue of this fun magazine later on in this post and so will a lot of other designers. Not to mention there are other GREAT prizes.  Hop on over to Quiltmaker to find out more.




 
This issue is so much fun and is a great bargain too!  I designed a block in Veranda using a combination of applique and piecing this time.




Three of these in a row would make a great springtime table runner.  But wait... we haven't even gotten to Christmas - why am I talking about spring? 

Speaking of the holidays, I have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to prepare for them.  I haven't made a gift, bought a present, or even thought about decorations.  I HAVE driven an inordinate amount of carpools shuttling kids to Nutcracker rehearsals, so that should count for something.  Is anyone else in such a quandry? 

But I know there are more organized souls out there who start sewing gifts in July and I would love to hear yours ideas.  So, to enter the giveaway for Volume 4 of Quiltermaker's 100 Blocks, leave a comment describing something you have been working on for someone else (or for yourself !).  And if you are hopelessly behind, like me, tell me what you would like to make.  You must be a follower to enter and please leave me a way to contact you should you win.     Wow, I love your block, it's gorgeous! That looks like a really great read!

    I am constantly trying to catch up with things...I feel like I have my Christmas sewing under control (not that I've started yet, but in my mind at least, the timeline is doable), lol.

    I love your block. I am working on memory quilts for my Son and Daughter. The quilts capture the life of my youngest Son who passed away Dec 11, 2010. It is a labour of love.

    Only yesterday I made a list of all my WiP's and I was very surprised to see ELEVEN.
    It didn't stop me to start a new quilt though, for Christmas (nr 11). As I was piecing it (and will continue today) I thought of an uncle of my husband's; I think he'd like it very much!
    Until now I have finished 12 quilts, big and tiny.

    Well, I've been busy working on preemie quilts, doll quilts and a baby quilt for my neighbor. None of these are for Christmas, though! I am working on a quilt that will be under the tree for my daughter (yes, it will!)

    I've sewn 3 car caddies, a zippered pouch and an art rollup. None of them are technically quilting projects but they are for Christmas. 3 will go in my Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes and 2 will be for our grandsons. And my list is very long - I hope I can get most of it done! Thanks for showing your lovely block and for sharing the magazine.

    I finished making stockings for the Stockings for Kids project, which really got me into the mood! Now I am working on small projects for gifts: table runners, mostly. I have an aunt for whom I know my table runner will become the mat for her dear dog's dinner bowl, which is fine with me.

    She's the same aunt I thought of when I saw your block; it reminds me of Mexican tiles, which remind me of her and her home. Funny how memory works...

    First of all, am loving your block!! It's just darling. I've been very busy at the sewing machine by day and in the evenings doing handwork. I am making a whimsical owl quilt from a Connecting Threads pattern and am stitching SewHappy.Me's Christmas Banner (and keeping up!! Imagine that!!).

    I have made 4 or 5 lap quilts to give as Christmas gifts and have a long list of other things I want to make. I do try to start early, but often get sidetracked working on other projects that need to be finished quickly. Love your block! I'm anxious to get this magazine with so much inspiration all in one place.

    I have 4 childrens quilts ready to wrap, one for each of our gandchildren. The other biggie is a tee shirt quilt for hubby, it is at your favorite long arm quilter now, can't wait to see what Debra N comes up with, I am sure it will be lovely!

    Your block is amazing and you are right it would make a great spring time table runner. I much prefer to think about spring (denial is a great place to be). I have a ton of projects started for Christmas - actually a couple of table runners. Now to only get them finished.

    To tell you about one. The table runner is made up of 6 circles that are individual. I used insul bright so that they can be separated and used as hot pads. Or you can use them as placemats or you can button them together and use as a table runner. Very clever if I finish it. LOL

    Well, thank goodness for Amazon.com LOL. I can shop while I am sitting at home on my computer. I have gotten a few golf goodies for my husband, and a couple computer goodies for the son. It helps to find those deals that aren't in the store, and I like when I can get the free shipping. I hate to pay for shipping!

    I finished a top for my cousin for Christmas, one of Bonnie Hunter's from Adventures with Leaders and Enders. My cousin is a big go green kinda girl, so I think she will love that it is made with left-over scraps and what would be throw-away thread!

    First, love gthe block!. I made a log cabin quilt in black and white for my son and wife....started it before Christmas last year, but is finally done.     Loving the block Amanda, but you always do beautiful things. Actually I have been working on things for others. I have made 4 baby quilts, working on a quilt for Steve, have 4 table runners in the works, working on a commissioned T-shirt quilt and have another quilt ready to go into the frame. Plus a gazillion mug rugs and potholders.

    Have several bags I wanted to make for Christmas gifts but I haven't even begun! I have been working on costumes for "Arsenic and Old Lace". Lots of fun working with vintage patterns.

    My daughter studied classical ballet for many years, recently decided to stop after a very painful, recurring injury. She danced almost all the children's parts in the big Nutcracker here in the capitol city (I'm in the same state that you are.) So I feel your carpool pain! Been there, done that!

    I just finished a quilt using Veranda, which just happens to be my favorite fabric for 2011, BTW! I also just finished a quilt for my dear aunt who lost her husband of 55 years this summer. My son's Christmas gift quilt is at the long arm quilter's house and I'm heading to Myrtle Beach in a few. Busy times for one and all. Have a joyous holiday with all whom you love!

    I always have a basket downstairs near my purse with "projects to go" or hand work to carry with me whether it is something that needs the threads trimmed, pieces that nee to be turned and stuffed for dolls or bears, knitting, what ever. If I am caught waiting or if my husband does the driving, I get a lot done.n I just change baskets depending on what needs to be done and how much time it will take.

    I am way behind on a bunch of bindings...Jammer's fire truck quilt, his 100 Good Wishes quilt, and Sunshine's Luv U cuddle quilt. With 2 little ones around there is never enough time. I would really love to make something for everyone in my family this year and hope that I can at least churn out mug rugs for all. Next year I'm planning on placemat sets.

    Gorgeous block you designed...I love for a block to be a little different, like having a mix of applique (or even embroidery) with the piecing. I so need to get going on Christmas gifts - and I promised some bazaar (not bizarre) items to the historical society, too. EEK!

    I am usually WAY ahead of the pack in regards to getting christmas presents made. I have made king size quilts for all my kids for the last couple of years but this year my health has gotten the best of me and I haven't made any christmas presents. If I feel better today I'm going to make some placemats for the kids. Personalized for each one.

    Such a pretty block. I love the combination of piecing and applique. My stitching friends and I have just started working on some projects (smaller ones) for Christmas. We have made mug rugs, pillow cases and zip bags. I feel very productive when we get together.

    I haven't even started anything for Christmas gifts! I would so love to make a "Halloween" quilt for Lillian the Halloween baby -- my God-daughter's daughter who turned 1 this year. I have the fabric and all; just haven't found the right pattern yet. Maybe I can work on that soon. But right now, I'm just not into the Holidays this year and my health issues is dragging me down. *sigh*

    Great block! I always try to make things for my mom--so far I have a pair of socks knit. I also always make ornaments for everyone--this year I'm knitting miniature stockings.     I am also hopelessly behind. In fact, I haven't started anything yet! My niece and I decided to have a Christmas craft workday the next time we get together. No idea what we might work on, though. She thought potholders would be good. I like the idea of placemats and table runners. Maybe we'll do a combination of the three and perhaps even through in a dish towel or two to complete the ensemble. But that doesn't take care of the men/boys/children.

    I would love to see this books with blocks designed by some of my favorite quilt designers.

    I am far behind on my Xmas projects too. I am in the middle of a camera bag, quilt and table topper. I have 2-3 more quilts in addition to this, and the little projects that just might (probably) won't get done.

    I have been a follower for a while. I make something for everyone every Christmas. I am so behind. This year I am making a notepad and pen holder for all the girls and a plaid quilt for one of my granddaughters and then I have to make ornaments for everyone. So much to do so little time. Hugs

    Beautiful block! This year we are taking the family to Hawaii so that is their gift. No wrapping required! I have finished some socks for the family that isn't going on the trip and will be making some homemade soap and almond roca for the rest.

    I'm so not thinking Christmas yet, as I am making my daughter's wedding gown (Jan 7 date) - and I know what you mean about Nutcracker rehearsals, as she is a dancer...and I used to be there working on costumes as well...not just carpooling.
    I love your block - reminds me not only of hearts but the dogwood trees in our yard, so I think my spring runner would have to be white and pink flowers!

    I am one of those people who have grandios ideas but not enough time. I've been working on 3 baby quilts but I work outside of the home so I have gotten really far behind. Iused to plan homemade gifts for every one and then end up having to buy at the last minute because I didn't have enough time to make them. This year I think it will mostly be gift cards since almost everyone in my family lives far away and postage is so high

    Christmas? ACK! NO! I am in the same boat as you and *I* have no excuse. I wanted to start back in June and never did. I started 2 weeks ago making a table runner and stopped before finishing cutting all the fabrics for some valid reason although I don't recall what it was. I just know once that 'emergency' was over I have not gone back to get moving on that again yet.

    And this is the first year I haven't even bought one thing yet. Over the past three years I have been buying little gifts all throught the year and have a huge pile of goodies by now. Sadly, that has not happened this year because we've had a few of our kids needing help so I opted to help them rather than to do the extra gift stuff since that was more important to help them instead.

    I would love to work on ANYTHING, but work and family obligations, including a trip across the country to take care of my 4 grandkids for 5 days has completely taken the place of any chance at sewing and quilting. I am going to a quilt retreat the 1st weekend in Dec tho, so then I hope to work on some project, as undecided, but many projects to choose from!

    That's a beautiful block! Each year I choose a theme for my granddaughter and make a few simple items, definitely an ornament and maybe a doll quilt or a milk glass rug for santa...So far I've gotten as far as choosing the them for this year-snowmen! My other projects include finishing up what I didn't finish last year :)

    You are not alone, Amanda! It is an almost fatalistic aversion to thinking about Christmas until it is almost too late, then POW!!! panic sets in, or a neat idea comes to me and everyone gets basically the same thing. One year I made at least a dozen fancy, schmancy shower caps with lots of organza and satin, and still bump into them occasionally. They were simple but desirable and useful! Your block rocks too!

I made a Pineapple Blossom for friends and thought I had a great jump on it because I finished the top in May. However, it won't get back from the quilter until after Thanksgiving. Eeessh!

    Congratulations on having your lovely block selected for this year's block book!
    I have been making mittens for Christmas gifts. I make them from felted wool sweaters that I buy in the thrift stores. The mittens are lined with fleece and are very warm. Also, just for stocking stuffers, I've made lots of little pouches to hold purse packs of kleenex. These are very quick and easy to make.

    Your block is lovely. I haven't started on a thing for the holidays. I had planned to make doll quilts for my 4 granddaughters and some small bags for my daughter, daughter-in-law, and a dear friend. I have thought about doing some baking ( I usually give an assortment of sweet breads to our kids), but haven't even made a grocery list of what is needed.     I usually do my holiday sewing right after and during the holidays, but for the next year. That way, by summer, I'm mostly done, and can do stuff for myself. I find it fun to work on holiday stuff during the holidays, but dont want to be pressured to finish it for the current year.

    I love your block! The colors are so bright and cheery! I don't usually work on handmade items for Christmas, but this year is different. My grandsons are getting old enough to play with cars (ages 5 12 to 1 yr.) so I am using a panel that has a little town with a road on it and making it as a play quilt. I have different car, truck and street sign fabric for the backing. They can carry, drag whatever and have a little quilt to drive their cars on!

    I'm in the middle of a couple of projects....one Christmas runner for a great friend of mine and a Quilt that our year 7s are making as an art project to leave at the school as a memorial of them! They've each been stitching a block with their name on it and I'm doing the 'in-between' blocks and putting it all together. I must hurry with both as the school year's nearly over and Christmas is coming fast!

    Ok, you asked for it... I started a project in July. It's a machine embroidered book "Twas the Night Before Christmas"! Each page takes between 4 and 6.5 hours to embroider and there will be 26 pages!! My plan is to make 3 books to give to each of my children's families. Now, here's the catch...I'm making them for Christmas 2012!!!!

    I love your design style! I just started "following" you. Thanks for the incentive. I have a tendency to procrastinate (I'm working on that) so I haven't done any Christmas sewing.     Last Christmas the members of my small quilt group exchanged fabrics with each other. We were to sew a quilt using the fabrics we received that we thought the fabric owner would like. Another member volunteered to machine quilt all the quilt tops for us! Our quilt "reveal" will be during the first week in December. I've finished my quilt and I am excited to see what the other members have made.

I have one QOV quilt I finished, but didn't like the border so feel I need to redo so it doesn't wave...then I inherited another almost done quilt for QOV that needs a few more blocks to make it lap size.     Amanda, I missed your opportunity but do like your block design for Volume 4. The applique flowers remind me of a heart design. I decided long ago not to try for holiday deadlines!
